The Facebook SecDef: Pictures from Ash Carter’s Hawaii and Singapore Trip

Now that he's on Facebook, here are some pictures for Defense Secretary Ashton Carter's first photo album.

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter is taking his outreach to Silicon Valley seriously. Having visited Facebook’s Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters last month as part of a Pentagon push to deepen relations with tech firms, Carter joined Facebook on Friday.

“This visit [to Facebook’s headquarters] drove home for Secretary Carter the impact social media can have on connecting our troops to the American people and improving connections among the force,” reads a Pentagon statement.‎‎

The secretary’s first post is a picture of him shaking hands with a Marine aboard an MV-22 Osprey in Singapore. Carter is there for the Shangi-La Dialogue, an annual meeting of Asia-Pacific defense leaders.

Since DOD photojournalist Glenn Fawcett is there documenting the trip, Carter should have no trouble creating his first Facebook photo album when he returns. Here are some pictures (and suggested captions) for that album.

Here I am with South Korean Defense Minister Korea Han Min-Goo, right, and Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani. These trilateral handshakes are so confusing. (Glenn Fawcett/DOD)

So happy I got to bring Stephanie along for the trip. Here we are at the U.S. Pacific Command change of command ceremony. (Glenn Fawcett/DOD)

What’s the best part about being SecDef? I can order room service whenever I want. (Glenn Fawcett/DOD)
