D1 The State of Cybersecurity 2016

As one of the most wired nations on earth, the United States is incredibly susceptible to cyberattacks. Recognizing these weakness, the Department of Defense has invested heavily in cybersecurity, including a dedicated Digital Defense leader and an incredibly complex encryption system. However, cyber vulnerabilities for the Defense Department and beyond are too numerous to count, much less completely fix. That doesn’t mean that a few simple solutions can’t make the entire online world a bit safer. But in other situations, the United States may need to deploy a larger, nation-state response. In these pages Defense One examines key cyber issues that will be stalking the Department of Defense and the online world in the years ahead.
