Pentagon certifies Alfresco records management app

The Defense Interoperability Test Command has certified a records management module from Alfresco that runs in the background of each user's computer, rather than running as a separate application.

The Defense Department's Joint Interoperability Test Command has certified a records management module from Alfresco meets the DOD 5015.02 standard for records management systems.

The 5015.2 set of standards is a set of baseline functions required for records management applications used by DOD. JITC tests and certifies software against the 5015.2 requirements and keeps a record of those applications that have passed muster. The 5015.02 standard defines the requirements that records management software needs to meet for managing classified records, supporting the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act, and interoperating with other records management systems.

Although mandated for Defense records management systems, 5015.2 is becoming a de facto standard for other government agencies as well.

The Alfresco Records Management Module can be added to the company's content management system, Alfresco Enterprise Edition 3.2. The enterprise version of this module will be ready for version 3.2 of the Alfresco Enterprise before the end of the year, according to the company.

The Alfresco content management system is distinctive for a number of reasons. Unlike most CMSes, it runs in the background of each user's computer, rather than running as a separate application. Also, the company releases an open-source version of the software.
