Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Vincent Stewart, currently in charge of the commander of Marine Forces Cyber Command, has been named the new leader of the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Defense Department has announced

Stewart, who becomes the first Marine and the first African American to lead DIA, will be promoted to the rank of lieutenant general just before assuming his new duties Jan. 23 during a ceremony at DIA’s Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling headquarters.

Before assuming command of the Marine Forces Cyber Command, Stewart was the intelligence director for Headquarters U.S. Marine Corps.

He succeeds Army Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, who retired after leaving DIA in August. Stewart’s appointment was approved by the Senate in December, the Pentagon said.

“A distinguished intelligence professional and dedicated warfighter, Major General Stewart brings a wealth of talent and leadership to the Defense Intelligence Agency and the nation’s intelligence community across the agencies and organizations,” Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren said.
