Boeing has completed installation of an enhanced data transfer network on the newly built guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance that was commissioned Oct. 1, company officials said Oct. 24.

The Gigabit Ethernet Data Multiplex System (GEDMS) is a data transfer network designed to deliver reliable, redundant, enhanced network communication capabilities through an IP-based backbone that supports multimedia services such as video and data. GEDMS will support data transfer for the upgraded hull, mechanical and electrical systems introduced into the fleet with the vessel.

The USS Spruance is the first combat-ready destroyer to be outfitted with GEDMS as part of the Navy’s ongoing modernization effort, the officials said.
