GAO finds duplication in military IT systems
In response, DOD says it is working to consolidate Army, Air Force and Navy IT services to cut costs.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office found 12 duplicative IT systems in the Defense Department and other federal agencies that cost more than $300 million from fiscal 2008 through 2013, according to a Sept. 12 report.
Four overlapping DOD investments worth over $30 million were cited in the report, including two that track the health care status of warfighters and two others for managing dental care. DOD responded in the report that the Army, Air Force, and Navy requirements are currently being consolidated into one Corporate Dental Application that is expected to be completed by fiscal 2017.
Duplication of IT systems was also found within the department of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services.
