Navy sailors get 19 official mobile apps

Sailors by the thousands are now conducting training exercises and learning service information through mobile apps.

Sailors with smart phones can now access and use hundreds of official U.S. Navy mobile apps providing important services such as training, pay data, career services and life-cycle management information, Navy officials said.
The emerging program was inspired by sailors accustomed to using Androids and iPhones; they approached the Navy leadership and explained the desire for them to use apps and interact in the way people do with smart phones.
Navy officials explained that the number of function apps has now grown to more than 19 apps available to sailors, an effort which began with the first app several years ago. The mature the program is designed to consistently collect and incorporate feedback from sailors, Navy developers explained.
“To date, there have been more than 186,000 downloads of the apps and 7,000 course completions,” said Ed Austin, spokesman for the Navy’s Enterprise Information Systems.  
With input from Navy sailors, the mobile apps developmental cycle was accelerated to get technology to the force on an expedited schedule.
Navy PEO EIS has been working closely with the service CIO to ensure the apps are designated and accessible as official U.S. Navy apps.
Anyone with Apple or Google app stores can access the publicly available content.
Other apps, available on the Navy’s applocker.navy.mil site, list courses for Navy life skills, pregnancy and information for those new to the Navy.
Training program mobile apps include the latest on key issues of relevance to sailors such as domestic violence, operational security, emergency contact information and suicide prevention.
Moving into the future, the Navy is working on a pilot that will permit sailors to download their app and see their own individual information, similar to banking apps.
