Navy CIO Robert Carey talks Web 2.0
The Navy needs Web 2.0 technologies to communicate and collaborate with those outside of the military, says Navy CIO Robert Carey.
Robert Carey, the Navy’s chief information officer, says the Defense Department is about to release a memo that establishes Web 2.0 and social media policies.
The mission in Haiti is one example of why the military needs to use social networking, he said Jan. 21, speaking as part of a panel at an AFCEA Bethesda Chapter event.
“For example, what’s going on in Haiti today," he said. "There are about 16 ships down there, there are about 8,000 sailors and Marines and there are hundreds of trucks being unloaded. We are on station getting it done. Now how do we communicate? Within the military we can do that quite well. How [do] we communicate with the country we’re aiding, with USAID and with the State Department? They are not on military channels. So we find ourselves on the common denominator. And what’s that? It is the Internet. What are the tools? They are Web 2.0 tools, they are collaboration tools.”
