A Horrible Day for American Leadership
In response to terror, a petulant president and a xenophobic GOP presidential field.
Monday was a horÂrible day for AmerÂicÂan leadÂerÂship. First, our petuÂlant, tone-deaf presÂidÂent showed more anÂger toÂward his politÂicÂal critÂics than toÂward ISÂIS. Second, the ReÂpubÂlicÂan presÂidÂenÂtial hopeÂfuls turned their backs on SyrÂiÂan war refugees in a xenoÂphobic frenzy.
At a news conÂferÂence in TurÂkey for the G-20 sumÂmit, Barack Obama bristled in deÂfense of his ISÂIS strategy, his iniÂtial disÂmissal of the terÂrorÂist state, his milÂitÂary reÂsponse, his dipÂlomacy, and his willÂingÂness to acÂcept refugees from SyrÂia.
“And,” wrote my colÂleague George ConÂdon, “there was no hidÂing his frusÂtraÂtion.”
Which was a shame, beÂcause nobody cares about Obama’s preÂcious feelÂings.
What the people of France and its freeÂdom-lovÂing alÂlies care about is deÂfeatÂing ISÂIS. They wonÂder about the comÂmitÂment of a U.S. presÂidÂent who disÂmissed ISÂIS as a “JV team” beÂfore it beÂheaded AmerÂicÂans, who deÂclared ISÂIS “conÂtained” beÂfore it atÂtacked ParÂis, and whose adÂvisers now say ISÂIS can’t atÂtack the United States. Nobody beÂlieves that.
“No,” Obama inÂsisted, “we haven’t unÂderÂesÂtimÂated [their] abilÂitÂies.” Nobody beÂlieves that, either.
For all his skills as an orator, Obama is a lousy comÂmuÂnicÂatÂor. He doesn’t lead, he lecÂtures. He arÂgues rather than eduÂcates. His rhetÂorÂic is self-foÂcused, not upÂliftÂing toÂward a cause greatÂer than himÂself. He spins and shifts blame, rarely adÂmitÂting fault.
Obama tries to show steely reÂsolve, but his afÂfect is stubÂborn arÂrogÂance.
Even his supÂportÂers slammed the presÂidÂent’s perÂformÂance. “Obama’s tone in adÂdressÂing the ParÂis atÂroÂcity was all wrong,” wrote WashÂingÂton Post columÂnist EuÂgene RobinÂson. “At times he was patÂronÂizÂing, at othÂer times he seemed anÂnoyed and alÂmost disÂmissive. The presÂidÂent said, esÂsenÂtially, that he had conÂsidered all the opÂtions and deÂcided that even a large-scale terÂrorÂist atÂtack in the heart of a maÂjor European capÂitÂal was not enough to make him reÂconÂsider his policy.”
Which brings me to the GOP, the source of Obama’s frusÂtraÂtion and an obstacle to the safety of SyrÂiÂan refugees.
“Wake up and smell the falafel,” said former ArkanÂsas Gov. Mike HuckaÂbee, usÂing a slur to arÂgue against the setÂtleÂment of refugees.
How does a party that proÂclaims the sancÂtity of life risk the deaths of so many inÂnoÂcents beÂcause it is difÂfiÂcult—not imÂpossible—to screen refugees? How can the party of reÂliÂgious freeÂdom inÂclude at least three canÂdidÂates who would adÂmit ChrisÂtiÂan refugees from SyrÂia, but no Muslims?
A reÂliÂgious test is conÂtrary to this naÂtion’s foundÂing prinÂciples. This brings to mind one of the ugliÂest chapters in U.S. hisÂtory, when a ship of JewÂish refugees fleeÂing the Third Reich was turned away from FlorÂida in 1939.
The NaÂtionÂal AsÂsoÂciÂation of EvanÂgelÂicÂals gets it. Shortly beÂfore the ParÂis atÂtacks, the group’s leadÂer auÂthored a column titled, “Where’s the ComÂpasÂsion on the CamÂpaign Trail?” that made a faith-based arÂguÂment for setÂtling refugees. It deÂconÂstrucÂted the scarÂiÂest of GOP talkÂing points.
“CanÂdidÂates do the naÂtion a disÂserÂvice if they propagÂate misÂinÂformÂaÂtion deÂsigned to inÂstill fear,” wrote Stephan BauÂman, presÂidÂent and CEO of the asÂsoÂciÂation’s huÂmanÂitÂariÂan arm, World ReÂlief.
“InÂstead,” he conÂtinÂued, “I hope that each canÂdidÂate will present a comÂpasÂsionÂate, inÂformed plan for how our great naÂtion can do more to welÂcome careÂfully-vetÂted refugees from SyrÂia and elseÂwhere who have fled perÂseÂcuÂtion; how we can betÂter equip our alÂlies in the Middle East and Europe to reÂspond to the much larÂger numÂbers of refugees they are reÂceivÂing; and how to bring about peaceÂful resÂolÂuÂtions to the desÂperÂate conÂflicts in the Middle East and elseÂwhere that have disÂplaced so many.”
The column was full of grace and comÂpasÂsion and so much of what it means to be an AmerÂicÂan. I wonÂder if BauÂman has woken up and smelled the falafel.
