Supporting the Global Mission: A New Approach to Help the U.S. Army Streamline Application Management

While the vast expansion of global military presence has helped the Defense Department stay ahead of its adversaries, it has hamstrung the Pentagon’s digital transformation efforts. To help solve this global IT challenge, the U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM) launched the Global Enterprise Fabric (GEF), a unified Infrastucture-as-a-service built to host and manage army applications — regardless of the warfighter’s location.

The U.S. military operates hundreds of bases around the world. In a July 2021 report from the American University Digital Research Archive, Professor of Political Anthropology David Vine suggests there are 750 U.S. bases across 80 countries. Other studies say that number could be even higher.

While the vast expansion of global military presence has helped the Defense Department stay ahead of its adversaries, it has hamstrung the Pentagon’s digital transformation efforts.

“Historically, when the Army stands up an enterprise application, they had to do so as separate instances,” explains Bill McArthur, senior account manager at Iron Bow Technologies. “You might stand up something at one Army location, but then you have to do it multiple times at other posts, camps or stations.”
