The U.S. Army plans to use unmanned aerial vehicles to assist with counterinsurgency and counterterrorism efforts next year in Africa and South America, reports Defense News.

Unlike the missions in the desert landscapes of Southwest Asia, these missions will involve surveillance situations in jungle settings, Army officials said. To be successful, sensor payloads and electronics will be adjusted to scan different kinds of terrain.

What’s more, the Army plans to step up efforts to share information among UAVs, ground controllers and helicopters using the Tactical Common Data Link system.
