Military follows commercial lead in immersive tech

The defense industry is doing its best to try to keep up with immersive, interactive technology developments in the commercial home entertainment industry that are happening at an extremely rapid pace.

The strained budget environment has compelled the Army to make a concerted effort to develop and deploy immersive technologies to serve soldiers’ continual need for dismounted and irregular warfare training, reports Defense News.

The efforts will likely focus on creating a future integrated training environment that includes "intelligent holograms and avatars for team leader engagement and for interrogations,” and “a virtual collaborative environment in which to conduct after-action reviews,” said Gen. Martin Dempsey, the Army’s chief of staff and former commander of the Army’s Training and Doctorate Command.

A number of commercial and defense companies are poised to help customers deploy avatars when they don't have the time and money to engineer custom avatars.
