DARPA seeks wireless power pack for recharging handhelds

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency wants to build a short-range wireless power transmission system for troops in the field that would charge up handheld gear, reports Adam Rawnsley at Wired’s Danger Room Blog.

As envisioned, one soldier could strap on a battery pack and other soldiers located within two meters would be able to draw power from it wirelessly.

DARPA hopes that its wireless power system will enable soldiers carrying portable electronic gear, such as smart phones or Global Positioning System devices, to be able to power up while on patrol without having to fuss with a tangled mess of charger cords.
