Greenert to take over as Navy CNO, Ferguson as vice CNO
Adm. Jonathan Greenert has been appointed to serve as Chief of Naval Operations, and Vice Adm. Mark Ferguson to serve as Vice CNO, the Defense Department said July 21.
Adm. Jonathan Greenert was appointed by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta July 21 to serve as chief of naval operations (CNO), a Defense Department press release said. He currently is vice chief of naval operations.
Greenert will replace current Navy CNO Gary Roughead, who is scheduled to retire in September.
Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates recommended Greenert to succeed Roughead based on Greenert’s solid portfolio that includes both significant personnel programs and budget responsibilities, according to an American Forces Press Service story.
In the same announcement, the DOD said that Vice Adm. Mark Ferguson has been appointed to serve as vice CNO. Ferguson is deputy chief of naval operations for manpower, personnel, training and education at the Office of the CNO and Chief of Naval Personnel.
Panetta also has reappointed Greenert to the rank of admiral, and appointed Ferguson to rank of admiral, as well.
