What, no conferences? Service chiefs to review all upcoming events

The Defense Department has ordered an immediate freeze on all conferences and related travel in an effort to cut down on travel costs.

The Defense Department has ordered an immediate freeze on all conferences and related travel in keeping with a May directive from President Obama calling on all federal agencies to reduce travel costs by 30 percent in fiscal 2013, reports Defense News.

The order, signed June 3 by Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter, orders the military service chiefs to review all upcoming conferences costing more than $100,000 to ensure that they “significantly further the Department’s mission,” the story said.

Conferences expected to cost more than $100,000 will require approval from top Pentagon officials, the story said.
