Army to test UAV sensor system
Unlike receive-only systems, the new system allows users to see a UAV's video and control its sensor at the same time.
The Army will test a new multisensor system, containing bidirectional data link software, on the MQ-1C Gray Eagle unmanned aerial vehicle this spring.
The Triclops system positions a sensor under each wing of a UAV. Users can control one of the sensors to manipulate its camera and laser rangefinder with a touch screen and stylus while an automated control flies the UAV, writes Richard Whittle of Aviation Week.
The Army could have the Triclops ready for deployment in Afghanistan as soon as December, and if it is effective there, the plan is to install the system on three other Army UAVs.
