New missile warning satellite launched into orbit

A military satellite designed to substantially boost the Air Force's missile defense and detection capabilities was launched into space May 7 atop an unmanned Atlas 5 rocket.

A military satellite designed to substantially boost the Air Force’s missile defense and detection capabilities was launched into space May 7 atop an unmanned Atlas 5 rocket, reports Space.com.

The launch sent the first of four planned Space Based Infrared System satellites into orbit.

The satellite built by Lockheed-Martin, known as GEO-1, will use infrared sensors to spot enemy missile launches.
