Marines advance cautiously toward smart phones

For now, the U.S. Marine Corps is just testing the smart-phone waters, but it could be the next branch of the military to dive into the mobile devices.

Unlike the Army, the Marine Corps hasn’t jumped on the smart-phone bandwagon – at least not yet – but it is exploring possible options, reports Spencer Ackerman at Wired's Danger Room blog.

In a request for information released June 20, the branch has a few questions it wants answered, Ackerman writes, before it commits to any actual smart-phone purchases, including how the Defense Department’s certification process will affect buying smart phones, and if and how it can secure commercial phones.

For now, the Corps is just testing the smart-phone waters, but it could be the next military service branch to leave the BlackBerry behind.
