iPhone app to fly drones in the works

A new iPhone app prototype may one day enable warfighters to control drones from the battlefield.

Boeing and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have partnered to develop an iPhone application prototype that may one day be used by the U.S. military to fly unmanned aerial vehicles, InformationWeek reported.

The app could be utilized by warfighters to control drones remotely from the battlefield, providing them with better views of a target or access to digital maps, the article said.

Boeing noted that the advantages of using a smart phone to control UAVs includes eliminating the need for warfighters on some of the more hazardous or monotonous missions.
