Virus seeks to exploit common access cards

Defense Department agencies have a new security threat to worry about in the form of a PDF attachment designed to compromise the common access card used by DOD personnel.

Defense Department agencies have a new security threat to worry about in the form of a PDF attachment designed to compromise the Common Access Card (CAC) used by DOD personnel, reports Philip Ewing at DOD Buzz.

The attachment, which appears to be a legitimate PDF file, seeks to capture the passcode or other information associated with the CAC, thus leaving the machine and network vulnerable to exploitation, the story says.

The Hacker Kingdom created the virus strain, which is named "Sykipot,” according to cyber analysts. DOD has acknowledged that the threat exists, but has declined to comment on it, according to media reports.
