After the United States, the Asia-Pacific region is the second largest buyer of unmanned aerial vehicles thanks to a steep rise in Asian defense budgets, reports Agence France-Presse.

As a result, annual global spending on UAVs is forecast to almost double from the current $5.9 billion to $11.3 billion over the next decade, according to the Teal Group. 

Among the countries either buying or manufacturing UAVs to boost their defense capabilities are Thailand, India, Singapore, Japan, Australia and Korea, the story states. The region has a number of  flash points, including the South China Sea, North Korea, South Asia and Afghanistan.
