10 years in the making: Coast Guard refines IT plan

The service is in the process of completing sensor capabilities for ships and aircraft that have been under development for the past decade, and is even considering a private cloud hosting system, among other IT upgrades.

The Coast Guard will begin using IT it has been developing for at least 10 years and is exploring using cloud services, Federal News Radio reports.

Rear Adm. Robert Day, the service's CIO, said recently the service is completing sensor capabilities for cutters and new aircraft, soon will issue a solicitation for private cloud hosting services for its human resources system and is studying using e-mail-as-a-service, especially for the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the article added.

Day said much of the Coast Guard's plan will focus on gaining efficiencies from IT spending and cybersecurity upgrades, the story said.
