Attack submarine Minnesota designed with upgraded warfare capabilities
Newly commissioned vessel is the tenth ship of the Virginia class.
The Navy's newest Virginia-class attack submarine Minnesota, SSN 783, was commissioned Sept. 7 during a ceremony held at the Naval Station in Norfolk, Va.
USS Minnesota is the tenth ship of the Virginia class and will provide the Navy with enhanced capabilities to meet multiple mission requirements. The submarine will directly support five out of the six Navy maritime core capabilities: sea control, power projection, forward presence, maritime security, and deterrence.
Minnesota is tailored to excel in anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare, strike warfare, special operations, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, irregular warfare and mine warfare missions.
The submarine is operable in both shallow littoral and deep water regions while diving at depths greater than 800 feet at speeds upward of 25 knots while submerged. General Dynamics Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries partnered to build Minnesota.
