Seapower symposium cancelled due to shutdown
The Chief of Naval Operation said the biennial conference is a victim of the government shutdown.
Another military conference has been cancelled due to the federal government shutdown.
The office of the Chief of Naval Operations announced on Oct. 15 that the 21st International Seapower Symposium scheduled for Oct. 22-25 in Newport, R.I., has been cancelled. The symposium is held every two years, and organizers said they expected Navy and Coast Guard representatives from 111 nations to attend.
The symposium focuses on regional information sharing, disaster relief, coalition military operations and joint maritime law enforcement. “The absence of funding associated with the federal government shutdown precludes us from hosting this important event," Adm. Jonathan Greenert, Chief of Naval Operations, said in a statement. "We will assuredly look at opportunities to host the event in 2014."
The seapower symposium is the latest DOD event to be either cancelled or postponed. Organizers of the annual geospatial intelligence conference, GEOINT 2013, said they have postponed that event until spring 2014.
