Pentagon Compromises in Spectrum Fight

The Defense Department is offering to compromise with wireless carriers over government spectrum that will soon be available for public auction, the Wall Street Journal reports.

There’s a growing need for spectrum, among commercial mobile companies as Internet use grows and among the military, particularly for training pilots how to fly drones.

In a letter to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, military officials said they could move out of the 1755 to 1780 megahertz bands “while ensuring no loss of critical DOD capabilities."

The Defense Department said it will cost about $3.5 billion to move its operations out of the spectrum.
