Ep. 53: Civilian casualty reporting and the war on ISIS with Alexa O’Brien and Chris Woods
Why has coverage been so lacking? A new report offers some answers.
Today we’re joined by journalist Alexa O’Brien and Chris Woods, the founder and director of Airwars. They published a report in July that revealed big gaps in Western media coverage of civilian harm from the U.S.-led airstrike campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
Since the war began in 2014, the U.S.-led coalition is believed to have killed some 29,000 civilians, according to Airwars. Coalition officials have admitted to causing more than 1,300 civilian deaths. And yet news coverage of civilian harm has been largely absent. This episode, we’re going to talk to Alexa and Chris about some of the reasons why coverage was lacking.
